Colorectal surgery at Boston West Hospital
Colorectal surgery is surgery to repair damage caused by rectum, anus and colon conditions. It is used to restore normal function of these body areas by fixing obstructions, blockages, ischemia, injury and damage.
Your general surgeon may perform colorectal surgery to treat: inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease), diverticulitis, haemorrhoids, anal fissures, bowel incontinence, gastrointestinal bleeding, rectal prolapse, and colorectal cancer.
There are many different operations that are specific to your diagnosed colon, rectum or anus problem. Most often they will use minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery as opposed to open surgery. It involves small incisions in a day case setting and offers fast recovery. During laparoscopic colorectal surgery, your surgeon inserts a laparoscope (a tube with a tiny video camera attached) and surgical instruments through small incisions in your abdomen to allow them to surgically repair the required area.
